Parent Education and Training

Based on the results of initial consult appointments, parents are provided with a mutually agreed upon treatment plan to help them improve their parenting skills. LRO Family Consulting recognizes that all families are different and that a treatment approach should be individualized based on the specific needs of each child and the needs of the family. Parents are asked to complete a home consultation interview worksheet accessed through the website prior to their first consult appointment. Written records from school or private evaluations may also be provided prior to the initial appointment. After the initial consult appointment, home visits may be scheduled to gain a better understanding of a child’s presentation through observation in the setting and at a time when the child may exhibit difficulties. Follow up home visits with home educators/social coaches for the modeling of effective parenting strategies and interventions may be part of the recommended treatment plan. Parents receive a parent-friendly comprehensive positive behavior support binder which includes an easy to read and implement behavior intervention plan and therapeutic supports for home use.

In addition to individualized parent education sessions, workshops and training series are offered at LRO Family Consulting. Watch for information in the News Section of this website for upcoming workshop dates and times. Areas of training include: specific topics for parents of children from infancy through the teen years, behavioral strategies and interventions for parents using positive behavioral supports (toddler to teens), behavioral contracting with young adults, social and adaptive behavior skill development, understanding the IEP process for parents, parenting children with ADHD, anxiety, executive functioning deficits, autism, developmental disabilities, mental health disorders, etc.

Parent Requested School Consultation

Parents may request in-school observations of their child in order for them to gain a better understanding of their child’s presentation as a learner. School observations are conducted during specific times of the day when a student is having difficulties accessing the curriculum or difficulties regulating their behavior. Observations are scheduled during both structured and unstructured periods of the day and typically last 90 minutes. The goal of the school observation may include a written report or behavioral summary and the development of positive behavioral supports that may help the child improve their learning skills and/or social skills in the context of their school setting. Homework and executive functioning support through home consultation is also provided when a student is having difficulties completing assignments, projects, studying for test/quizzes or when they may need help with organization as it relates to school.

Special Education Consulting for Parents

Navigating the special education process can be a challenge for many parents. Through consultation, parents will understand how eligibility for special education works in their school district and how best to advocate for their child as a partner or effective team member throughout the process.  Parents are encouraged to share evaluation reports, outside evaluations, routine school assessments and/or previous Individualized Education Plans prior to meeting attendance.  Consultation may include school meeting attendance and the review of proposed IEP or 504 Plans.  Parents may also request a formal Program Evaluation of their child’s existing or recommended special education program that includes a written report to be shared with school staff at the request of the parent.
